Introduction

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders encountered in clinical practice. Patients frequently present with recurrent abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, bloating, urgency, incomplete evacuation, and digestive discomfort. The chronic and relapsing nature of the disease often results in significant physical, psychological, and social distress.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, IBS closely resembles Grahani Roga, where impairment of Agni (digestive fire) leads to improper digestion, formation of Ama, and disturbance of intestinal function. Management focuses on restoring Agni, correcting bowel function, and improving overall digestive health.

Patient Profile

  • Age: 55 years
  • Gender: Female
  • Diagnosis: Chronic Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Duration of Illness: Approximately 3 years

Chief Complaints

The patient had been experiencing symptoms suggestive of IBS for nearly three years, including:

  • Recurrent abdominal discomfort
  • Altered bowel habits
  • Irregular digestion
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Frequent gastrointestinal distress
  • Reduced quality of life

The symptoms were chronic, recurrent, and significantly interfered with routine daily activities.

Medical History

The patient had consulted several physicians over the preceding three years and had received multiple treatment regimens. Although temporary symptomatic relief was achieved at times, there was no sustained improvement.

The patient continued to experience recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms despite prolonged treatment.

There was no significant history of major systemic illness contributing to the present condition.

Ayurvedic Assessment

Based on the patient's history and clinical presentation, the condition was assessed from an Ayurvedic perspective as being consistent with Grahani, associated with impaired digestive function and disturbed bowel regulation.

Treatment Objectives

  • Improve digestive strength (Agni)
  • Regulate bowel movements
  • Reduce gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Restore normal digestive function
  • Improve overall quality of life

Treatment Protocol

Medicine Prescribed

Monk Hemp Bilwadi Vati

Dosage

  • One tablet twice daily
  • Oral administration

Duration of Initial Evaluation

Seven days.

No additional changes in medication were introduced during this observation period.

Clinical Outcome

The patient was reviewed after seven days of treatment.

A remarkable improvement was observed in the majority of the presenting symptoms.

Clinical Improvements Observed

  • Significant reduction in abdominal discomfort
  • Improved bowel regularity
  • Better digestive function
  • Reduction in bloating and abdominal uneasiness
  • Improved overall sense of well-being
  • Enhanced ability to perform daily activities comfortably

The patient expressed high satisfaction with the treatment response and reported feeling considerably better within the first week itself.

Discussion

IBS remains a therapeutic challenge because of its multifactorial etiology and recurrent clinical course. Many patients continue to experience symptoms despite prolonged conventional treatment.

In this case, administration of Monk Hemp Bilwadi Vati produced rapid symptomatic improvement within only seven days. The formulation appeared to support normalization of digestive function and bowel regulation, leading to significant relief in chronic symptoms.

Although this represents a single clinical observation, the response was noteworthy considering the chronicity of the illness and previous inadequate response to multiple therapies.

Further prospective studies with larger patient populations are warranted to scientifically evaluate the efficacy and safety of Monk Hemp Bilwadi Vati in the management of IBS.

Conclusion

This case demonstrates encouraging clinical outcomes in the Ayurvedic management of chronic Irritable Bowel Syndrome using Monk Hemp Bilwadi Vati.

A 55-year-old female suffering from IBS for approximately three years experienced substantial symptomatic improvement within just seven days of treatment.

The case highlights the potential of Ayurvedic formulations in improving digestive health and quality of life in patients with chronic functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Author's Clinical Note

The rapid symptomatic improvement observed in this patient reinforces the importance of individualized Ayurvedic management in chronic gastrointestinal disorders.

Monk Hemp Bilwadi Vati proved to be an effective therapeutic option in this case, offering early and meaningful relief where previous treatments had not produced satisfactory results.
